Music Genre Assignment

1. NEO PSYCHEDELIA
-MGMT
-MGMT uses the analog synthesizer and a synthesizer uses analog circuits and analog signals to generate sound electronically. MGMT uses synthesizers a lot in their music to create their electronic/alternative type sound. The instruments usually look like a keyboard that produces a different sound and can dramatically change the sound of a song with just one push of a key.

2. NINETIES
-Pearl Jam
-Pearl Jam uses The White Fender Stratocaster which is a type of electronic guitar that is sometimes used by Pearl Jam head Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam is one of the best current rock bands, in my opinion, they started up in the grunge area after Nirvana and followed their trend of low sounding guitars with the use of technology in their guitars but sticking to classic rock standards of instruments.

3. DJ CULTURE
- Grandmaster Flash
-DJ Grandmaster Flash is a solid figure in the DJ Industry for his work in the creation of sampling and creation of the empath mixer, in part based on what technical challenges he needed to beat. Without sampling or beats, there would not be much music for DJ's to use.

4. DISCO
-Kool and the Gang
-Kool and the Gang is an R&B disco band that mixes soul with dance music. Their most famous song is "Celebration" and they used technology in the '70s and '80s with the use of the keyboard to produce sounds to make their soul music something people could dance to.

5. GIRL POWER
-Lady Gaga
-Lady Gaga is one of the most successful artists in the world right now and while she has an amazing voice and is very talented in playing music she uses a lot of technology in her performances to further elevate her image and show effects on her face like the David Bowie tribute she did where she projected David Bowie's face onto her own.

Xerox Project

For my Xerox Project, I used my arms and legs as tree trunks and my hands as leaves to show trees coming together and all the leaves touching to show the unity with people and nature. Growing up on my block all of my friends would say if our trees were touching then we would be friends so to me this represents friendship with people by representing it through nature but with my body parts. I also like how my hands are touching like a team coming into a huddle and all putting their hands in so this has multiple ways to show unity and that was my main goal through this.

Robots

I think in the future that robots will be everything and that is pretty scary to think of. In almost all movies about robots, they rise up and try to take over the world which is pretty reasonable to think. When we place all human jobs into the hands of robots they will dictate how everything runs and if things go wrong there's nothing we can do because they just get smarter and smarter. There needs to be a fail-safe in each robot that will shut them down if things go wrong. But as a lot of movies show robots can be smart enough to disable that fail-safe then we would really be screwed. We already have a lot of automated things which are replaced human jobs like self-checkout at stores and self-driving cars. Some things make things easier but a lot harder to trust. I always use self-checkout but sometimes there are problems that only humans can solve, and as far as self-driving cars I would not want to trust that just based on the fear if something goes wrong. To save jobs every robot should have a human handler so there isn't mass unemployment but moving the world to be more technologically advanced.

Flip Book Video

This is my Flip Book Video, I chose to do an underwater scene with different fish swimming through, yellow submarine, and a man fishing. I added underwater noises to get the full effect. Here is the link for better quality: https://youtu.be/cJwTa9ikBG8

Performance Art Piece Stuff

Modern Sleep

My performance art piece is about how college students don't get enough sleep and the factors that lead to sleep deprivation that distract us at night and how it affects us during the day. I chose this because I personally suffer from really bad insomnia and find it really hard to fall asleep at night. I've noticed that I get really distracted before bed with electronics, social media, food, and other things that keep me awake so I decided that for this piece I will be recording that and showing the audience why I stay awake and the effects of it. I will be showing a type of flipagram/ slideshow of every time I go to bed for a week or two which ranged between 1-4am to show my progression of drowsiness and then when I wake in the morning to show how I am throughout the day. I think the audience will profit because a lot of people can relate to having trouble going to bed with all the distractions that occur around us before bed especially with classes and work. I am going to try my best to add humour in the video to keep the audience entertained but also showing the negative side effects in a serious way. The props in using are things that keep me awake at night like my phone, computer, Playstation, school work, food, and other things and these are important because they are all big distractions that ruin my sleep habits.

Old Technologies vs New Technologies

Some wild technology that was introduced in the late 1980s was the clapper, in which to turn on your lights all you had to do was clap. Back then this was mind-blowing that you didn't need to flip a switch anymore to turn your lights on or even get up from where you were sitting. This has developed over time with more wireless technologies that you can speak to turn your lights on or off or do it from your phone. An example is Alexa by Amazon where you can say "Alexa turn on living room lights" or "Alex dim the lights" and she will do it for you without you having to move. There are different varies of this like Google Home or Echo dot or even Siri on the iPhone. Everything today is become more wireless and is encouraging less movement by humans. Which as we have seen in the movie WALL-E can be a bad thing where everyone just sits all day and doesn't move. In the future, more technology will be developed where people don't have to move to cook their food or do their laundry or anything. Everything in your house will completely be digitalized and do everything for you. There are already commercials that mock this idea and show how lazy our future generation will become.

Difference Between Artist & Inventor

An Artist is someone who creates something with meaning that is meant to either please or shock people. An artist could be someone who paints a picture or writes a song and that artist has meaning behind it but the people who view it may not see it the same way. While an inventor creates something new that is used for a common purpose. Like the invention of the light bulb was used to create light in the dark or the invention of the car was to get from point A to point B quicker and more efficient. While both Artists and Inventors create something new the reasoning behind them are different. Artists create art to inspire and represent a feeling through mixed media while inventors invent to try to get something new that is to be useful for everyone. An artist can be considered an inventor and an inventor can be considered an artist each go hand in hand but the results they produce can differ in major varieties.

Spiderman Skittles Art

For my Skittles grid art I made a Spiderman face with a green background. Since Spiderman has a red face with white eyes and black outline I used the red skittles for his face, yellow for the eyes, and a dark purple as the outlines. I think it turned out pretty good especially if you squint your eyes. It was very difficult to make but a fun project overall.

Broadway Blog

I have seen multiple Broadway shows including Hamilton, Wicked, The Adams Family, and Young Frankenstein. My all-time favorite is Hamilton and I know almost every word to every song but I have to say the best performance of any one song in a Broadway show, in my opinion, is "Defying Gravity" in Wicked. It is performed right before intermission and I listen to it online all of the time. the performers are the great Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. I love Idina Menzel's vocal range and especially her performance in Frozen has made her one of my favorite female vocal artists. The song itself has a mixture loud and quite parts which keep the audience on the edge of their seat and listening to it is very powerful. Wicked is a great musical following the lives of the good witch and the bad witch from the Wizard of Oz. I think everyone should see it or listen to the soundtrack because it is very good.

Film Festival Movie

The movie we viewed was about the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a band I have never heard of before but was surprised how much I liked the music. The film itself was very long almost 110 minutes which seemed like it kinda dragged on but the band itself was really cool how it went to the roots of African American music through the use of the banjo and fiddle. The sound of the band was really fun and I can see how people would like to dance to this at outdoor festivals. I was surprised they played at such a huge event as Bonnaroo which meant they have a huge following to bring thousands of people to their show. I also thought it was interesting that the two lead members of the band were a romantically together at one point then split up and the next thing that happens she has a husband that is travelling with the band, which is very awkward. As a filmmaker that was a cool thing to make a movie about since the director actually travelled with the band for so many years and became like part of the family while with them. If I was in a band I don't think I'd want a person filming me every step of the way so it was cool to see a whole bands journey and the paths that each person took after the peek.

Animated Madam Butterfly Video

This was a very interesting video that must have took a lot of time and patience to create. The opening sex scene was definitely something I never thought I would see but it was crazy how someone took the time to create that motion by motion. The birthing scene was cool by using a fish to represent a child coming out of the womb and the way that must have been created through stop motion must have taken forever especially when the baby is being flown like a kite. The story overall is very sad about how the man took advantage of her, let her have the baby, then come back to take it and leave again resulting in her killing herself. It was very disturbing seeing her rip her body apart and something I'll probably never want to see again. I am just impressed with the person who took the time to create this which is kind of cool with it being all stop motion. It was very artistic and had good representations of the actual Madam Butterfly opera.

500 Years From Now - Tom Lawlor

500 years ago no one thought we would be as advanced as we are today, but what about 500 years from now? I think that in 500 years our biggest worry will be the environmental impacts that will change in our world. Water levels are already rising because of the melting ice caps so in 500 years I think there will be no ice caps and most of the land we have today will be underwater, I'd say in less than 500 years states like Florida, Lousiana, and California will be completely underwater from the rising water levels. What changes will humans have made? I think we will have colonies on other planets and the ability to travel in space much easier as well as being a very robotic society with all the strides we are making today with robots, in 500 years we will be completely revolutionized by robotics and environmental impacts causing human life to adapt to new living habits.

Interview with Raul Cuero

The interview with Raul Cuero was very interesting and inspirational because he had a great outlook on life. His story from coming from nothing and becoming an inventor and microbiologist is amazing. He said that in order for people to be more creative they have to be able to perceive nature which I agree with one hundred percent. To be able to be creative in either art or something else they have to go out in the world and be influenced by nature and the environment around them, no one can have amazing creations by just staying inside and isolating yourself from nature. I also agree with him about how kids today spend to much time inside and looking at screens and don't get to have the experience of interacting with nature and other people. Parents who give kids iPads when they are like six years old are basically killing their imaginations because they'll be so used to staring at a screen than interacting with other people. His main point was to not be afraid to go out and do something and I try to use that in my life to not let the possibility of failing to keep me from experiencing something new.
